Recently I've read a fair bit of information that says this is an old method because of speed overheads but VHDx resolves those. Two VMs have a 60GB VHD as their OS drive (hosted on the drive above) and then have an additional 1TB pass-through drive for storing user file data. So the host only has the SSDs and the 1 drive hosting the VHDs online. Then the two additional 1TB pairs be set up as pass-through drives on 2 VMs. The basic plan was one of the 1TB pairs be the VHDx hosts for the primary drives and in all VMs. One of the functions is two file servers for separate groups.
We plan to run Hyper-V machines for various functions.
We have them set up to run in pairs and in a hardware RAID1 mirror for each pair. Two SSDs for host OS and six HDDs for storage. We are planning the install of a shiny new server.
